Early life

Shaun King was born in Franklin County, Kentucky, in the United States on September 17, 1979. His mother, Naomi Kay King, brought him up with his brother. He first enrolled in Huntertown Elementary School for his studies, and then transferred to Woodford County High School.

While growing up in Kentucky, King claims to have been a victim of prejudice. When a bunch of students attempted to run the truck over him on school grounds, he was on the verge of being murdered. Despite this, school officials took the side of the students and did nothing. He was severely abused by rednecks as he grew up, forcing him to drop out of high school for two years.

Shaun continued his education at Morehouse College, where he majored in history and graduated with honors. He took a medical leave of absence in the middle of his undergraduate career, and when he returned, Morehouse named him an Oprah Winfrey Scholar. He had to satisfy community service requirements in order to keep his scholarship, and in the process, he began teaching at Franklin Lebby Stanton Elementary School.
