Hyman and Jeanette (née Seicol) Lear welcomed Norman Milton Lear into the world in New Haven, Connecticut in July of 1922. Notably, while his mother is Ukrainian in descent, his father is Russian. Additionally, Lear had a younger sister called Claire Lear Brown who died in 2015.

Before entering at Boston’s Emerson College in 1940, Lear completed his studies by graduating from Weaver High School. To join the U.S. Army Air Forces, he left school, nevertheless, in 1942.
