Early life

On November 13, 1952, Merrick Garland was born in America, in Chicago. Growing up in northern Chicago, he spent much of his time. His father, Cyril Garland, used to own and operate Garland Advertising, while his mother, Shirley, worked as the director of volunteer services for Chicago’s Council for Jewish Elderly.

He attended Niles West High School for his formal schooling. In 1970, he was class valedictorian and received his bachelor’s degree. He went on to Harvard University, where he majored in social studies. Merrick had previously aspired to be a physician, but he eventually decided to pursue a career as a lawyer.

He went to Harvard Law School after graduating in 1974 from Harvard. Merrick worked as an article editor while pursuing his legal degree. He graduated from Harvard Law School with a J.D. in 1977.

After then-President Bill Clinton selected Merrick for the post, he was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia on March 19, 1997. The Republican Senators voted 76 to 23 to confirm his nomination to the United States Court of Appeals. He took over as Chief Judge of the D.C. Circuit on February 12, 2013. For seven years, he was the Chief Judge. On February 11, 2020, his term expired.

Joe Biden appointed Garland as US Attorney General on January 20, 2021, following his victory in the 2020 presidential election. With such a vote of 70 to 30 in favor, the Senate approved him for office. Assistant Attorney General for the Administration Lee Lofthus swore Garland in as Attorney General on March 11, 2021. After former Minneapolis Police Department officer Dereck Chauvin was revealed to be implicated in George Floyd’s killing, he recently announced an inquiry against the department.
