Early Life
Keith Sweat was born to Charles and Juanita Thompson in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City in July of 1961. His father worked at a factory and his mother as a hairdresser. In 1973, his father died, leaving his mother to raise him and his four siblings alone. Meanwhile, we don’t know what high school Sweat attended in the area, but we do know that he earned a communications degree from City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1980s.
Sweat worked as a night stock boy at Macy’s Department Store before moving on to a brokerage business as a mailroom worker. He rose through the ranks of the New York Stock Exchange to become a brokerage assistant. Sweat began his musical career in 1975 as a member of Jamilah, a Harlem-based band.
