On April 10, 1954, Alma Geraldine and Rogelio L. Williams gave birth to Juan in Colon, Panama. When he was four years old, his family boarded a banana boat to go from Panama to the United States. After that, the family moved to Brooklyn, New York.
He attended Oakwood Friends School for his formal schooling. He went on to Haverford College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy in 1976.
