Jon Gruden was born in Sandusky, Ohio on August 17, 1963. The Cleveland Browns were his favorite team as a kid. Jim Gruden, his father, was a football coach. Jim has worked for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a regional scout, player personnel director, and quarterbacks coach. He is the eldest of two siblings. In the Arena Football League, one of his brothers, Jay, has both played and coached.

He attended Clay High School, according to his educational background. He enrolled at Muskingum College after high school graduation in 1982. Jon was moved to the University of Dayton after a year of study there. Gruden graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Dayton in 1986.
