Early life
On November 21, 1989, Jimmy Hayes was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Kevin Patrick Hayes, another ice hockey player, is his brother. Keith Tkachuk and Tom Fitzgerald, his cousins, have also played in the NHL.
In 2005-06, Jimmy was a member of the United States National U-17 Team at the 2005 Four Nations Tournament. Following that, he represented the 2006 US U-17 Select Team at the U-18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament. After being selected in the 2006 USHL Futures Draft, he was given the opportunity to play for the Ohio Junior Blue Jackets.
In 2006-07, Jimmy participated in the USA Hockey National Team Development Program (NTDP) as a member of the under-18 team.
