On July 15, 1976, Jim Jones was born in New York City, United States, as Joseph Guillermo Jones II. His father, Joseph Guillermo, is a Puerto Rican, and his mother, Nancy Jones, is an African American.
Jones had lived with his maternal grandmother for most of his childhood. He enrolled at Catholic School to further his education. He was skipping lessons, though, since he was going to the training station to play hooky.
Jones was later dismissed from school after being caught selling candies stolen from a shopkeeper near the church where he was studying.
