Early Life
Jesse Jackson grew up in a segregated environment, having to sit in the rear of the bus and use different water fountains due to Jim Crow legislation. He also attended Sterling High School, which segregate him on the basis of race. Such events would subsequently drive his desire to become a political activist.
Jackson excelled in school, serving as student class president and participating in sports such as football and basketball. On a football scholarship, he went to the University of Illinois.
He then transferred to North Carolina A&T, citing racial hostility as one of the factors in his decision. Jackson became involved in civil rights demonstrations when he was in college.
