Edwards was born in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, on August 7th, 1927. As a young man, he aspired to be a preacher and even preached at the Nazarene Church. He was even a member of the United States Navy Air Corps during World War II. Edwards graduated from the Louisiana State University Law Center following his military service.

In 1954, Edwards ran for Crowley City Council and won. He picked the Democratic Party as his party of choice. After years of hard work, Edwards was elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 1964, defeating Bill Cleveland in a huge upset. He elects the United States House of Representatives for Louisiana’s 7th congressional district after serving as a floor leader for two years.

He was found guilty on 17 of the 26 counts against him and sentenced to ten years in jail as a result. Edwards’ sentence completes on July 6, 2011, after he serves eight years in jail.

Personal Life

Edwards married Elaine Schwartzenburg for the first time in 1949. They had four children together. After her name by Edwards, she even serves as the temporary U.S. Senator. After forty years together, the pair would ultimately split in 1989.

Candy Picou, whom he married in 1994, was his second wife. Edwards’ incarceration, on the other hand, had a negative influence on their marriage, and they divorced in 2004. His third marriage would be the most well-known, as he married Trina Grimes, a woman about 50 years his junior, and the two appeared together on the reality show.

Because of respiratory difficulties, Edwards died on July 12, 2021, at the age of 93.
