On September 18, 1984, Bakari Sellers was born in  New York City. New Cleveland and Gwendolyn Sellers, his parents, raised him. Cleveland’s father was a professor as well as a civil rights leader. He grew raised in Bamberg County, South Carolina, and spent his youth there.

He attended Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School, which is located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, for his schooling.
